Monochlorophenols were degraded to benzoate via phenol by the initial dechlorination and the subsequent conversion of phenol to benzoate in anaerobic sediment samples of estuarine Lake Shinji under methanogenic conditions. To characterize bacteria that dechlorinate 4-chlorophenol and transform phenol to benzoate, we analyzed the microbial community structure of the enrichment culture with each 4-chlorophenol and phenol by the limiting dilution method with polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) of 16S rRNA gene. After serial dilution of the culture, the 4-chlorophenol-dechlorinating culture consisted of two dominant bacteria, one of which was most homologous with Dehalobacter sp. In the enriched culture with phenol, minor band homologous with Cryptanaerobacter phenolicass corresponded to the transformation activity. 相似文献

Abstract A microwave-induced, steam/Ar/O2 , plasma “torch” was operated at atmospheric pressure to determine the feasibility of destroying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of concern. The plasma process can be coupled with adsorbent technology by providing steam as the fluid carrier for desorbing the VOCs from an adsorbent. Hence, N2 can be excluded by using a relatively inexpensive carrier gas, and thermal formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx ) is avoided in the plasma. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the technical feasibility of destroying VOCs from gas streams by using a commercially available microwave plasma torch and to examine whether significant byproducts were produced. Trichloroethene (TCE) and toluene (TOL) were added as representative VOCs of interest to a flow that contained Ar as a carrier gas in addition to O2 and steam.The O2 was necessary to ensure that undesirable byproducts were not formed in the process. Microwave power applied at 500–600 W was found to be sufficient to achieve the destruction of the test compounds, down to the detection limits of the gas chromatograph that was used in the analysis. Samples of the postmicrowave gases were collected on sorbent tubes for the analysis of dioxins and other byproducts. No hazardous byproducts were detected when sufficient O2 was added to the flow. The destruction efficiency at a fixed microwave power improved with the addition of steam to the flow that passed through the torch. 相似文献

Artemia franciscana was grown on Isochrysis galbana Green (clone T. Iso) at saturated food concentrations (13 to 20 mg C l−1) for 11 d at 26 to 28 °C, and 34 ppt salinity. Three groups of brine shrimp were used in the feeding experiments: metanauplius
III and IV (Group 1), post-metanauplius II and III (Group 2) and post-metanauplius VIII (Group 3), corresponding to 4-, 7-
and 11-d-old animals, respectively. The ingestion rate, clearance rate and carbon balance were estimated for these stages
at different concentrations of 14C-labeled I. galbana ranging from 0.05 to 30 mg C l−1. The handling time of algae was determined for all three groups. The ingestion rate (I, ng C ind−1 h−1) increased as a function of animal size and food concentration. In all three groups, the ingestion rate increased to a maximum
level (I
max) and remained constant at food concentrations ≥10 mg C l−1 (saturated food concentrations). The clearance rate (CR, μl ind−1 h−1) increased with increasing food concentration up to a maximum rate (CR
max), after which it decreased for even higher food concentrations. The functional response of A. franciscana was most consistent with Holling's Type 3 functional response curve (sigmoidal model), which for the two oldest groups (Group 2
and 3) differed significantly from a Type 2 response (p < 0.05). The gut passage time for the three groups of A. franciscana, feeding on saturated food concentration (20 mg C l−1), varied between 24 and 29 min. As the nauplii developed to pre-adult stage the handling time of the algae increased as a
function of animal size. The assimilation rate (ng C ind−1 h−1) in the youngest stages (Group 1 and 2) increased with increasing food concentrations, reaching a maximum level close to
10 mg C l−1. At higher food concentrations the assimilation rate decreased, and the proportions of defecated carbon increased, reaching
60 to 68% in the post-metanauplius stages (Group 3). The assimilation efficiency (%) was high at the lowest food concentrations
in all three groups (89 to 64%). At higher concentrations, the assimilation efficiency decreased, reaching 56 to 38% at the
highest concentrations.

To understand how regeneration in corals may be affected by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the process of repair of experimentally
induced tissue lesions was investigated in the solitary scleractinian coral Fungia granulosa. Three lesion sizes were inflicted in situ on large, sexually mature individuals (>5.5 cm diameter) and in small sexually
immature (<5.0 cm) individuals. Repair was monitored using photography and computerized image analysis. This procedure was
carried out in fall (September to November; post-reproductive months), and repeated with a new set of corals in spring (March
to May; gametogenic months). Reproductive effort was investigated histologically 1 to 2 months following lesion infliction.
In field experiments, there was a significant difference in percent of tissue coverage 8 weeks after lesion infliction between
spring and fall for all lesion sizes in large corals. During the fall, all lesion sizes in large corals were repaired within
8 weeks. Large lesions in small corals did not undergo repair regardless of season. During the spring, none of the corals
underwent complete repair regardless of coral size, and many of the small corals died. In laboratory experiments, 83.3% of
the corals kept at 25 °C and 16.7% of those kept at 21 °C underwent repair during the fall. None of the corals maintained
at 21 °C and only 16.7% of those corals maintained at 25 °C underwent complete repair during spring. Though both fecundity
and tissue regeneration were significantly reduced, gametogenesis continued in corals that had previously undergone experimental
injury. These results indicate that in fungiid corals, regeneration is affected by intrinsic factors such as size and reproductive
state as well as by environmental factors such as ambient water temperatures. Moreover, it is possible that, following injury,
energetic resources are diverted from repair towards the maintenance of reproductive effort.

Life history parameters of ”old endemics” and ”new invaders” among the Australian passerines were compared, controlling for
phylogeny by using current, phylogenetic research methods. Old endemics were found to have significantly smaller clutches
and demonstrated significantly more cooperative breeding than the new invaders, whose fledging periods are significantly longer
than those of the old endemics. We argue that breeding under conditions of a small annual food increment during the breeding
season, as is probably the situtation in Australia, is possible only when clutch size is small, or while breeding cooperatively,
or by extending the fledging period. Our data show that the old endemics use the first two options, while the new invaders
employ the third.

Free amino acids and energy metabolism in eggs and larvae of seabass, Lates calcarifer 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Contents of free amino acids (FAA), protein and ammonium ions together with rates of ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption
were measured in order to study the role of FAA as an energy substrate in developing eggs and larvae of seabass (Lates calcarifer) maintained in seawater (30 ppt) at 28 °C without feeding. Initially eggs contained 25.3 nmol ind−1 of FAA of which 21.5 nmol was rapidly utilised by the developing eggs and larvae during the period up to 40 h post spawning
(PS) when nearly all the yolk had been resorbed. During the same period, a net increase in protein content of 1.7 μg ind−1 was observed, indicating that the major part of the amino acids lost from the free pool had been polymerised into body proteins.
Assuming that the balance of the FAA after protein synthesis was used entirely for energy metabolism, FAA appeared to be an
important energy substrate during the embryonic stages (2 to 16 h PS); after hatching, the contribution of FAA to energy metabolism
was less significant. From 50 h PS until the end of the study period at 100 h PS, amino acids derived from somatic protein
were used for energy metabolism. For the overall period from just after spawning up to 100 h PS, the data indicate that ca.
14% of the total aerobic energy metabolism was derived from amino acid catabolism.

Vinclozolin, a dicarboximide fungicide, is an endocrine disrupting chemical that competes with an androgenic endocrine disruptor compound. Most research has focused on the epigenetic effect of vinclozolin in humans. In terms of ecotoxicology, understanding the effect of vinclozolin on non-target organisms is important. The expression profile of a comprehensive set of genes in the amphipod Hyalella azteca exposed to vinclozolin was examined. The expressed sequence tags in low-dose vinclozolin-treated and -untreated amphipods were isolated and identified by suppression subtractive hybridization. DNA dot blotting was used to confirm the results and establish a subtracted cDNA library for comparing all differentially expressed sequences with and without vinclozolin treatment. In total, 494 differentially expressed genes, including hemocyanin, heatshock protein, cytochrome, cytochrome oxidase and NADH dehydrogenase were detected. Hemocyanin was the most abundant gene. DNA dot blotting revealed 55 genes with significant differential expression. These genes included larval serum protein 1 alpha, E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, mitochondrial protein, proteasome inhibitor, hemocyanin, zinc-finger–containing protein, mitochondrial NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase and epididymal sperm-binding protein. Vinclozolin appears to upregulate stress-related genes and hemocyanin, related to immunity. Moreover, vinclozolin downregulated NADH dehydrogenase, related to respiration. Thus, even a non-lethal concentration of vinclozolin still has an effect at the genetic level in H. azteca and presents a potential risk, especially as it would affect non-target organism hormone metabolism. 相似文献

Abstract Azinphos‐methyl, carbaryl, dimethoate, phosmet and phosalone were used in apple orchards to manage apple aphid, apple maggot, woolly apple aphid and leaf eating caterpillars. Among the five insecticides evaluated, dimethoate, carbaryl and azinphosmethyl were the most toxic to the nymphs and adults of Hyaliodes vitripennis (Say) from two regions. Phosalone was the least toxic. Nymphs were more resistant than the adults. While the LC50 for dimethoate was 130 ppm for nymphs, it was 3 ppm for adults from St. Jean‐Baptiste‐de‐Rouville. There were also significant differences in the level of resistance between the two regions where the H. vitripennis were collected. At St. Alexandre the LC50 for phosalone on nymphs was 19, 250 ppm whereas, at St. Jean‐Baptiste‐de‐Rouville it was 160, 000 ppm. 相似文献

The equilibrium composition of product gases from the combustion of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHC) has been studied for varying ratios of C, H, Cl, and O under stoichiometric to fuel-rich conditions. An interactive, PC-compatible FORTRAN program, STANJAN, was utilized in conjunction with thermochemical data sources to calculate equilibrium compositions of gas mixtures as a function of temperature. The predicted results, when judiciously Interpreted, assist in the understanding of the potential for formation of residual organic substance emissions (ROSEs) in post-flame environments of an incinerator. Arguments are presented for the potential formation of chlorinated species, which are stable at ambient temperature, if locally fuel-rich mixtures penetrate into the lower temperature zones of an incinerator. ROSEs that have been observed in field tests of incinerators burning chlorinated compounds are predicted to form under the fuel-rich condition. Furthermore, when the equivalence ratio is greater than unity by even a slight amount, the degree of chlorination of product gases increases markedly when the Cl/H ratio also exceeds unity. In that case, time, temperature, turbulence and an overall fuel-lean stoichiometry may not be sufficient to guarantee elimination of measurable levels of chlorinated products. Possible implications of the equilibrium calculations are discussed. Further systematic studies with additional CHCs, nitrogen?, sulfur?, and heavy metal-bearing compounds are recommended as well as continued efforts to carry out kinetic studies. 相似文献

In the construction industry, contractors have been facing the challenge to meet the emerging needs related to the reduction of environmental impacts during the construction process. Generally, the commitment of efforts and resources from contractors to meet these needs is motivated by the influence exerted from environmental regulations and stakeholder demands. However, managerial environmental concerns and size of firms also account as key factors affecting the adoption of green construction practices. Therefore, the aim of this research is to identify those factors influencing contractors to adopt green construction practices by using data gathered from a survey. From the results, it has been found that managerial concern is the most important driver for the adoption of green practices. Significant relationships have also been found between government regulations and business size with the adoption of green construction practices. However, there is no significant evidence on the relationship among the adoption of green construction practices with perceived stakeholders’ pressures. The findings from this study are significant in the understanding on the factors of green construction management.
